An open view often leads to exposure to the prevailing winds, and the featureless courtyard of this barn conversion was no exception. It also suffered from a lack of privacy because a public footpath runs along its boundary fence. A sheltered inner courtyard was constructed surrounded by attractive but hardy plants chosen for their ability to withstand wind on an exposed site. A raised area defines the main entrance to the house, whilst car access to the kitchen door allows for unloading shopping; all features that combine to make this a practical and elegant private retreat which still affords a wonderful view over the countryside.
